KCRC awards purchase contract for 22 double-decked buses
The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) today announced the award of a contract to purchase 22 air-conditioned double-decked buses.
The contract, at a value of about $55 million, was awarded to Dennis.
The 22 buses are targeted for delivery from the third quarter of the year 2000.With the new buses, the KCRC bus fleet will grow by more than 20% to a total of 129, representing a significant enhancement of its carrying capacity.
The new buses will be used initially to operate an interim bus service for the rapidly-developing Tin Shui Wai north area prior to the completion of the new Light Rail extensions.
Two Light Rail extensions, with a route length of 4.4 kilometres, are being planned and are targeted for completion by the end of 2003 to tie in with the opening of West Rail Phase I.The purchase of the new buses will enable the Corporation to provide an interim service to people in the area.
A KCRC spokesman said that the tendering exercise was conducted in accordance with the World Trade Organisation's procurement requirements and the Corporation's tendering policies.
Specific environmental requirements have been set for the design of the bus engine in order to reduce fuel consumption and the level of emissions.
