Walkalong for Light raises HK$2 million for Lifeline Express

More than HK$2 million has been raised in today's Walkalong for Light, a charity walk jointly organized by the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) and Lifeline Express.
Over 4,000 people from 54 organisations participated in the 6km walk, which was held to raise funds for the Lifeline Express hospital trains and to mark KCR's 90th year of service to the community. The Lifeline Express hospital trains provide free medical care to people suffering from cataract in remote parts of the Mainland.
Among the VIPs at the grand starting ceremony were the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Honourable Tung Chee Hwa, and Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Jiang Enzhu.
Mr Tung, Mr Jiang, Chairman of Lifeline Express the Honourable Mrs Nellie Fong, and KCRC Chairman and Chief Executive Mr K Y Yeung officiated at the grand starting ceremony at Hung Hom Station.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Yeung said: "Walkalong for Light is a meaningful event. We are delighted to see KCRC staff as well as representatives from over 50 other organisations taking part in this event today."
He noted that three years ago on 1 July 1997, a ceremony was held at the same place for the launch of the Lifeline Express hospital train.
"In the three years since then, both the Lifeline Express and KCRC have made substantial progress. Lifeline Express has expanded from just one train to two and has provided free medical care to more than 10,000 cataract patients in remote areas of the Mainland.
"As for KCRC, we have also been expanding.West Rail has been under construction for two years and we expect to start work on three extensions of East Rail later this year. All of these projects are scheduled for completion from 2003 to 2004 and Hong Kong will then have a better, more integrated railway network."
Mr Yeung said KCRC was not only an operator of high quality, environmentally-friendly transport services but also a caring organisation.
"As KCR enters its 90th year of service, we have broadened the scope of our community services beyond Hong Kong.In May this year, our charity efforts reached out to the international community when we issued commemorative tickets for the benefit of the Red Cross. By organising this walkathon, we are also extending our care for the community to the Mainland," he said.
