KCRC awards contract for Light Rail extension works

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) today announced the award of a HK$907 million contract to expand and improve the existing Light Rail network.
Contract CC-230 was awarded to Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited for the construction of two Light Rail extensions in Tin Shui Wai, the grade separation works in Tuen Mun and the related modification works at four Light Rail/West Rail interchanges. Leighton will be responsible for the construction of civil, permanent way, traction power and overhead line works associated with the project.
The two Light Rail extensions in Tin Shui Wai, at a total length of about 4.4 kilometres, comprise one new Light Rail terminus, eight at-grade stops, one elevated stop and other related works. Upon completion, the new extensions will link up with the existing Light Rail network and interchange with the West Rail Tin Shui Wai Station.
The grade separation work at Tuen Mun Pui To Road includes the construction of a 1,200-metre long viaduct over three Light Rail/road junctions, connecting with the newly elevated San Fat Stop and enabling Light Rail it to interchange with the West Rail Tuen Mun Station.
Additional grade separation work will be carried out at Tuen Mun North near Lam Tei Interchange. A 300-metre long viaduct will be built to elevate Light Rail over the existing Light Rail/road junction at Tsing Lun Road.
The contract also includes the modification works at four Light Rail/West Rail interchanges at Tuen Mun, Siu Hong, and Tin Shui Wai and Yuen Long.
A KCRC spokesman said the contract was awarded through competitive tendering procedures, which comply with World Trade Organization requirements.
Contract CC-230 is one of the major construction contracts of the Light Rail extension and grade separation project, which involves a total investment of about HK$2.3 billion. Another five railway systems contracts will be awarded later this year, added the spokesman.
With the award of the contract, construction works for the Light Rail extension and grade separation project will commence in the first quarter of 2001 and will be completed by the end of 2003 before the commissioning of West Rail Phase I.
