KCR Light Rail extends its reach in Tin Shui Wai

Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation’s (KCRC) 4.4-kilometre Light Rail Tin Shui Wai Extensions, part of a $2.3 billion project to integrate the system with West Rail, entered the construction phase today (24 April).
Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Light Rail Tin Shui Wai Extensions, Mr Jonathan Yu, KCRC Director of Light Rail, noted that the construction of the new extensions is intended to provide a vital transport link for the rapidly developing new town in Tin Shui Wai, where the population is expected to increase from the current 130,000 to 300,000 in 2003.
Mr Yu said, "The extensions is a clear demonstration of KCRC’s commitment to the development of the community. These works, when completed, will bring immense social and economic benefits to the community.
"Together with other Light Rail improvement projects being undertaken in the next two and a half years, KCRC can ensure that the Light Rail system will be transformed into a major feeder for West Rail when it opens at the end of 2003. These works include the grade separation works at several major junctions in Tuen Mun, the construction of four Light Rail/West Rail interchanges, and the installation of a new signaling system for the new extensions."
Also speaking at the ceremony, Mr Tang Siu Tong, Chairman of Yuen Long District Council noted that the Light Rail Tin Shui Wai Extensions project is one of the major infrastructure works that will help the area cope with rapid population growth.
Mr Tang said that the project, yet another major investment project of KCRC in the North West New Territories, reflected the Corporation’s commitment to the development of the community.
The two Tin Shui Wai extensions commencing works today are the Tin Shui Wai Phase 4 Extension and the Tin Shui Wai Reserve Zone Extension. The Tin Shui Wai Phase 4 Extension will complete the existing loop with a line linking the current Tin Shui Wai Terminus to West Rail's Tin Shui Wai Station. The Extension will be 1.7 kilometres long and will have three stops and an interchange stop with West Rail.
The Tin Shui Wai Reserve Zone Extension will be built in the northern part of Tin Shui Wai. It will be 2.7 kilometres long and have six stops and a new terminus.
These new extensions will be commissioned at the same time that West Rail Phase I opens in 2003. By then, it will form a vital part of an integrated railway system that enables passengers to travel to the urban area in a convenient, fast and reliable way.
