In this issue of Trackrecord: two new KCRC milestones
On 2 April another breakthrough for Hong Kong’s transport industry took place as the then Chief Secretary for Administration the Honourable Mrs Anson Chan and KCRC Chairman Mr K Y Yeung presided over the breakthrough ceremony for West Rail’s Tai Lam Tunnel.
The ceremony, which took place shortly before Mrs Chan’s departure from the civil service, marked the completion of the final section of the West Rail Tai Lam Tunnel, which has been under construction for the past 22 months.
A different kind of breakthrough took place on 20 April when a ceremony was held commemorating the official start of construction on the Tsim Sha Tsui Extension. This was an especially historic moment for the Corporation as it marked the return of KCR to Tsim Sha Tsui for the first time since 1975. The project is also significant for the greater convenience it will bring to passengers travelling to and from the New Territories once it is completed in 2004.
In addition to these events covered in the current Trackrecord are stories on developments at Light Rail; an interview with Light Rail’s General Manager of Engineering, who discusses the Corporation’s new "green" buses; East Rail’s first – and highly successful – Passenger Fun Day; and the launch of a cab simulator designed for the new generation of train cars at East Rail.
