KCRC welcomes gazettal of amendments to Spur Line scheme

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation today (Friday) welcomed the gazettal of amendments to the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line scheme under the Railways Ordinance.
The spokesman said this represents another step forward in bringing to fruition the combined viaduct and tunnel scheme which is urgently needed to relieve congestion at Lo Wu.
The revised scheme will not cause any impact on the ground surface in Long Valley as the railway will cross this area of high ecological value in tunnels.
The spokesman said issues in relation to tunnel construction, including loss and contamination of ground water, subsidence and blow-out, will be addressed by way of the use of an Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine which has been proven to be very successful in the construction of one of the most difficult sections of the West Rail, the Tsing Tsuen Tunnel.
The Corporation submitted a new EIA report on the Spur Line to the Director of Environmental Protection last week.?Consultation with various parties including the Advisory Committee on the Environment, green groups, and local communities will continue.
