KCR West Rail Siu Hong Station topped out

KCR West Rail Siu Hong Station was topped out by KCRC Chairman Mr Michael Tien Puk-sun and Legislative Councillor the Honourable Mrs Miriam Lau Kin-yee today (Tuesday).
Speaking at the topping out ceremony, Mr Tien said, "The completion of Siu Hong Station on time and within budget demonstrates KCRC's expertise, experience and competence in railway construction."
Like Tuen Mun Station which was topped out last year, Siu Hong Station is constructed above Tuen Mun River to reduce land take as much as possible and to minimise the impacts on the areas by the banks. This, however, poses great construction challenge. Tuen Mun River is a major drainage system for the low-lying North West New Territories and its water flow therefore cannot be impeded. Works in the river can only be carried out during the dry season from October to March. The construction team also had to widen the section of the river along the station by about 17 metres to compensate for the impacts to water flow caused by the 352 large piles installed in the river to support the station.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Honourable Mrs Lau said, "West Rail Siu Hong Station will interchange with Light Rail directly. The residents of Tuen Mun may fully utilize this integrated transport network to travel to the urban area by West Rail with the feeding service provided by Light Rail. I believe that this comprehensive transport facility will open up the development potential of industries, commercial activities and properties in Tuen Mun, thus promoting the prosperity of the community."
With a gross floor area of 30,000 square metres, Siu Hong Station is a two-storey station with the concourse level on top of the platform level. There are two public transport interchanges, with one at the northern end and one at the southern end of the concourse. On the side of the concourse which faces Siu Hong Court, there is an extended structure which goes across and above the Light Rail track to link up the station with the existing Light Rail Siu Hong Stop for the convenience of passengers interchanging between two systems.
Construction works of Siu Hong Station commenced in July 1999. The contract was awarded to HK ACE JV at HK$1,386 million.
