KCRC welcomes issuance of Environmental Permit for Lok Ma Chau Spur Line

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) today (Tuesday) welcomed the issuance of the Environmental Permit for the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line by the Director of Environmental Protection.
A KCRC spokesman said, "We are very pleased to receive the permit. It marks another step forward in the implementation of this project which will provide a second rail crossing to relieve the growing congestion at Lo Wu.
"We will implement all of the permit conditions, which reflect the methods and procedures set out in our own environmental impact assessment (EIA) report.
"We are now studying the permit conditions carefully with a view to putting in place a comprehensive programme for implementation by both the Corporation and its contractors.
"As required by the permit, we will set up an Environmental Committee before construction commences to oversee the implementation of the mitigation measures and compliance with permit conditions. The Committee will be chaired by a member of our senior management, and membership and terms of reference will be submitted to the Director of Environmental Protection for approval," the spokesman said.
Subject to the approval of the KCRC Managing Board, authorization by the Chief Executive in Council and award of construction contracts, works on the Spur Line are expected to commence in the third quarter this year for completion by mid-2007.
