Memorandum of Understanding strengthens cooperation between KCRC, Shenzhen Sungang Customs

The operational efficiency of cross-boundary rail freight services and the level of mutual cooperation between KCRC and Shenzhen Sungang Customs will be greatly enhanced as a result of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 26 June 2002.
Mr Ian Petersen, General Manager, Freight said the signing of the MOU will help to streamline cargo transit and transshipment procedures and custom inspection efficiency.
"This MOU is a major milestone in the cross-boundary rail freight business since it is the first such agreement executed between the KCRC, which is a Hong Kong entity, and the Mainland Customs authorities. It paves the way for the long term development of a partnering relationship between KCRC and Shenzhen Sungang Customs", Mr Petersen said. He added that KCRC already enjoyed sound working relationships with the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department.
The MOU was signed at Shenzhen North Station in a ceremony also marking the inauguration of improved Customs inspection facilities on 26 June 2002. During the same ceremony, the KCRC’s Mainland railway counterparts, namely the Guangshen Railway Company Ltd, also signed an agreement with Shenzhen Sungang Customs.
Mr Petersen said "All of these moves are targeted at improving the speed and efficiency of inspection and clearance of rail-borne freight being transported between Hong Kong and the Mainland in both directions."
