Opening ceremony of "West Rail Coming Soon" programme
The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) today (4 December) held an opening ceremony for the "West Rail Coming Soon" community involvement programme at Tuen Mun Town Plaza.
"West Rail Coming Soon" is the first of a series of pre-operation community involvement programmes aiming at enhancing public awareness of West Rail scheduled for commissioning in autumn next year. The programme, which includes roving exhibitions and a "West Rail Café", a forum for the management of West Rail to meet with the public to learn about their views on and expectations for West Rail, will be staged in the five districts along the West Rail alignment from December 2002 to January 2003.
In his welcome remarks, Mr K Y Yeung, KCRC Chief Executive Officer said that the name of the programme – "West Rail Coming Soon" – carries double meaning. On the one hand, it announces to the public that West Rail will be opening soon; on the other it highlights the railway’s speedy service, which greatly shortens the traveling distance between North West New Territories and urban Kowloon.
Mr Yeung added that to ensure the public will enjoy a safe, comfortable, reliable and fast railway service upon the opening of West Rail, an Operational Readiness Steering Committee, of which he is the chairman, and an Operational Readiness Working Group, co-chaired by the Director of West Rail and Director of Light Rail, have been set up.
Also held during the ceremony was a prize presentation to winners of the poster design, tongue twister writing and essay writing competitions organised among secondary schools along the West Rail alignment earlier. The competitions, which were part of the "West Rail Coming Soon" programme, met with overwhelming response - more than 700 highly creative entries were received.
