KCR West Rail ready to launch trial operation

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) today (14 June 2003) organized a presentation ceremony of training certificates and outstanding trainee awards for its frontline staff at Lingnan University. It was attended by KCRC Chief Executive Officer Mr K Y Yeung, Senior Director, Finance & Management, Mr Samuel Lai and other senior management staff.
West Rail has planned to commence operation in September this year. Today’s ceremony marked another major milestone for West Rail as a comprehensive trial operation will be launched following the completion of training for frontline staff.
Mr K Y Yeung said in the ceremony, "through the application of value engineering, the exercise of proactive project and contract management, the arrangement of timely and appropriate financing during the construction of West Rail, an operating railway company with no experience in building new railway lines has come a very long way to completing West Rail on time and within budget. In the process, we demonstrated our ability to take on more new projects."
KCRC has been placing a lot of emphasis on training. To prepare for the launch of West Rail, the Corporation started the staff-training programme last year. Apart from both classroom and on-the-job training, all new recruits have to go through rigorous examination and assessment before they can assume their duties.
According to Mr Samuel Lai, all staff members, irrespective of their department or grading, are key members of the Corporation. He has every confidence on the new recruits and he said, " I firmly believe that the West Rail team will not fail the Corporation’s expectation. They will deliver a quality transport service for the community in line with the Corporation’s mission."
Director, East Rail, Mr Y T Li, encouraged staff members to make continuous effort to broaden their knowledge and enhance their technical competence. In addition, they should maintain a positive working attitude and a customer first culture.
Director, Light Rail, Mr Jonathan Yu, believed that all the new recruits had mastered the essential skills for railway operation and were ready to take up the challenges in the provision of a convenient, speedy and quality service for future West Rail passengers.
The trial operations for West Rail will soon commence with a view to ensuring that the target for train punctuality can be achieved and that all the systems will work up to the required standard. The trainees will be involved in station management. Emergency drills and recovery of faults.
A total of 400 drivers, station operators and Control Centre staff, as well as 150 engineering staff attended the ceremony today. They mainly come from Operations Department, Rolling Stock Department and Infrastructure & Buildings Department.
Outstanding Trainee awards were presented to a total of 28 trainees with remarkable performance at today’s ceremony in recognition of the efforts and achievements they made during the training period.
