New KCR / MTR interchange subway at Kowloon Tong Station opens tomorrow

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) and the MTR Corporation today announced that a new interchange subway linking up the two rail networks at Kowloon Tong will open tomorrow (15 April).
The new 60-metre long subway will connect a new southern concourse of the KCR Kowloon Tong Station with a new entrance D of the MTR Kowloon Tong Station, supplementing the existing subway which links up the two stations. It is anticipated that about 30% of the interchanging passengers will use the new subway.
KCRC General Manager, East Rail Operations, Mr Anthony Yan said, "The opening of the new subway and the new concourse will not only provide better facilities, but also greater convenience for passengers transferring between the two networks. The new extended KCR Kowloon Tong Station will have a handling capacity of 300,000 passengers a day and will be able to meet passenger demand for the next 15 years."
MTR’s Head of Operations, Mr Wilfred Lau said, "Kowloon Tong is one of the busiest transport hubs serving passengers transiting between the Mainland, the New Territories and urban Hong Kong. The new subway and station facilities will not only help to meet the increasing passenger demand at Kowloon Tong but will also provide our customers with a more comfortable travelling environment."
Apart from the new concourse and the new subway, the KCR Kowloon Tong Station’s expansion project also includes the provision of a new entrance on To Fuk Road and the addition of three lifts, five escalators and three staircases. The new 1,800-square-metre concourse also has 14 ticket gates, six ticketing machines, six shops, and a ticket office.
At the MTR Kowloon Tong Station, the expanded concourse features a new entrance D fitted with 12 new ticket gates and one wide-gate. Four new shops at the entrance to the subway will serve passengers. A new passenger lift has also been installed at Entrance E.
In addition, as part of MTR’s Art in Station Architecture programme, the new subway will feature a giant mural entitled "Eight by Eight". Comprised of 12 vitreous enamel panels, the mural is a computer graphic design created by Mr Bing Lee, a renowned artist brought up and educated in Hong Kong.
Throughout the design and construction stages, the KCRC and MTR Corporation worked closely to ensure a smooth completion of the project.
