KCRC to launch an eight-week blitz to promote safety

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) will launch an eight-week blitz to promote passenger safety.
Starting from the end of July for eight weeks, KCRC will hire 80 Safety Assistants to enhance passengers’ awareness of the safe use of escalators and lifts, and to remind them to beware of the platform gap.
This year’s safety campaign, whose slogan is "Be alert – Enjoy a safe ride", aims to educate passengers on the safe use of escalators, to be alert to the platform gap and, for Light Rail passengers, to cross pedestrian junctions safely.
General Manager, East Rail Operations Mr Anthony Yan said, "KCRC’s top priority is to provide passengers with a safe, reliable, efficient and value-for-money service."
The Safety Assistants were one of KCRC’s initiatives to promote safety. The assistants would be stationed at East Rail stations every day from 12pm to 3pm.
With the growing number of Mainland visitors to Hong Kong and many of them taking East Rail to other parts of the territory, KCRC has prepared a safety leaflet in simplified Chinese characters for distribution at stations. Most train and platform announcements on safety are also now broadcast in Cantonese, English and Putonghua.
KCRC has also recruited 50 Safety Kids who will help put across the safety messages and help distribute safety leaflets to passengers, including Mainland tourists.
As for Light Rail safety, the Corporation will install bollards or railings at 34 junctions to encourage the public, in particular, cyclists, to stop and look before crossing. The installation, which will cost more than $300,000, will be completed by the end of this year.
KCRC also carries out anti-jaywalking operation jointly with the police on a regular basis and the next one will be held on 22 July.
