KCRC completed tests for all major underframe components of East Rail trains

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) today completed non-destructive test (NDT) for all major underframe components of East Rail trains. Results indicated that no cracks were found on new major components. All new cracks found were minor ones.
Mr Michael Tien, KCRC Chairman, said that the problem areas had now been identified. As safety mitigations had been introduced on all major components and two non-major components with the heaviest weight earlier, KCRC could assure passengers that East Rail train operation was safe and reliable. The cracks found did not have any impact on train operation and passenger safety.
Mr Tien added that KCRC would continue to closely monitor the cracks found on the train underframe components and would not relax vigilance. Apart from conducting hammering test and visual inspection for major underframe components every 48 hours, KCRC would also inspect the industrial-use straps and metal cradles used to reinforce components every 48 hours to ensure safety.
The Independent Review Panel commissioned by KCRC will continue to analyse data and conduct in-depth investigation. It is expected that preliminary conclusion and long term mitigation measures will be available at the end of this month.
Mr Tien noted that given the present situation, he was confident that normal East Rail services could be maintained throughout the Lunar New Year holiday. KCRC will be closely monitoring train operation during this period and will maintain close liaison with Transport Department and other relevant Government departments to take appropriate measures to meet passengers' demand.
KCRC completed non-destructive tests for all East Rail underframe major components at 7:00am this morning. Among the 1,465 major components checked, cracks were found on 189 welding of mounting brackets and 23 on upper mounting brackets. In addition, of the 121 major components checked in the past day, new cracks were found on 7 more welding of mounting brackets and 5 more on upper mounting brackets (Please refer to attachment for details).
As of noon today, of the 480 all non-major components checked, cracks were found on 46 welding of mounting brackets. In addition, among the 21 non-major components checked in the past day, new cracks were found on 2 more rectifier cases. KCRC will continue to conduct checks for the rest of the 6,535 non-major components. The inspection is expected to complete in May this year.
As the checks for all major components have been completed, starting tomorrow (23 January), members of the public can call the KCRC Hotline at 29293399 for any enquiry on the tests of the components.
