Emergency drill for Ma On Shan Rail

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC), in collaboration with the Fire Services Department, the Hong Kong Police Force, and the Transport Department, carried out an emergency drill at Ma On Shan Rail Ma On Shan Station this morning. The drill was designed to test the co-ordination and responsiveness of all teams in emergency situations, in particular the functioning of the 'Emergency Evacuation System' unique to the Ma On Shan Station.
In the drill scenario, a fire broke out on a Ma On Shan Rail train as it was approaching Ma On Shan Station causing heavy smoke. KCRC staff and relevant emergency services teams were summoned to the spot to assist in the evacuation of passengers. KCRC staff activated the 'Emergency Evacuation System' to ensure passengers can leave the station premise and escaped to the ultimate place of safety.
KCRC's Safety & Quality Manager Mr Alex Lau said, "Ma On Shan Station is directly connected to the nearby shopping malls so that in case of emergency, all passengers must be directed to an outdoor area and escaped to the ultimate place of safety. As such, KCRC has been authorised by the Government to activate the 'Emergency Evacuation System' thereby regulating the traffic lights in the vicinity of the station to stop traffic temporarily while passengers cross the road to the ultimate place of safety. This drill was conducted smoothly. All the rescue teams worked well and demonstrated a high level of co-ordination and communication. The 'Emergency Evacuation System' has also performed well. The result was satisfactory."
During the drill, Ma On Shan Rail operation remained normal and passenger services were not affected.
KCRC organises a number of large-scale joint emergency drills with external parties every year to ensure the best possible responsiveness, co-ordination and communication among KCRC staff and emergency services organisations.
