KCRC introduces new safety device - LED flashing lights to promote escalator safety

To enhance the safety awareness of passengers using escalators, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) will put on trial a new safety device - LED flashing lights - at both ends of an escalator.
The LED flashing light is now on trial at Hung Hom Station. The device can draw passengers' attention when they step on or leave the escalator. If the device is proved to be effective, it will be installed at other stations.
Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the "KCRC Escalator Safety Campaign 2006" jointly organised with Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), Mr Tsui Wai Keung, Senior Director, Transport (Acting) said, KCRC would also invest more than $800,000 on other safety measures, including the installation of tri-lingual audible devices of "Please hold the handrail" and bollards at escalator landings.
The audible device has been installed on escalators where there are relatively more accidents. The locations include East Rail Hung Hom Station, Kowloon Tong Station, Sheung Shui Station and Lo Wu Station; West Rail Siu Hong Station and Ma On Shan Rail Heng On Station. Bollards will also be installed at the escalator landing of 74 busy escalators along East Rail stations.
As part of safety campaign, KCRC also recruited young "Safety Pioneers" and "Safety Family" and encourage them to help promote escalator safety through their daily life.
To encourage elderly to use the lift, KCRC will also distribute a souvenir to those who give up using the escalator and take the lift. Some of the souvenirs are sponsored by Hoe Hin Pak Fah Yeow Manufactory Limited (Hoe Hin). Mr Stephen Gan, Executive Director/CEO of Hoe Hin also composes and sings the theme song for the Campaign.
