Light Rail Rationalization to be launched on 8 October

The Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) today announced that KCRC will launch a series of Light Rail service improvement measures on 8 October, for the purpose of easing the congestion situation at platforms of some Tin Shui Wai Light Rail stops.
Mr Y T Li, Senior Director Transport said the Corporation has met with different community groups in the past week and has thoroughly considered their suggestions. In formulating the new Light Rail rationalization measures, KCRC has incorporated the comments and suggestions gathered from many District Council members and residents through the lengthy and extensive consultation processes.
Under the Light Rail service improvement plan, KCRC has not reduced any resources in Tin Shui Wai area. On the contrary, the Corporation will allocate additional resources in the area by adding a new bus route to serve Tin Shui Wai North residents. The new bus route will enable Tin Shui Wai North residents have better transport arrangement to Yuen Long East.
New improvement measures include combining Routes 761 and 761P, with the termini at Tin Yat and Yuen Long terminus. Compared to the current combined headway of 5 minutes of Routes 761/761P, the new 761P will run more frequently at a 4.5-minute interval in the morning peak period. Besides, headways of Tin Shui Wai Circular Routes 705 and 706 will be enhanced from 6.5 minutes to 5 minutes so that Tin Shui Wai residents can enjoy more convenient Light Rail services.
To facilitate the elderly and passengers with special needs travelling straight from Tin Shui Wai North to Yuen Long East, KCRC adopted the suggestion raised by some community groups and will run special service of Light Rail Route 761P at 30-minute interval from 10:00am – 3:00pm in the daily non-peak period.
KCRC will closely monitor the Light Rail services, keep track of passenger opinions on the new arrangements and review its service in three months' time to ensure that the services can meet the needs of the travelling public. The Corporation will also report the Light Rail new service arrangement at Transport and Traffic Committees of Yuen Long and Tuen Mun District Councils in November.
As announced previously, KCRC will offer a rebate of more than 10% to passengers using Octopus to travel between Tin Wing, Tin Yuet, Tin Sau, Wetland Park or Tin Heng stops and Hang Mei Tsuen to Yuen Long stops. Adults can save $0.5 and children/senior citizens can save $0.3 for each trip (including return trip). The discount will be offered from 8 Oct to 15 Oct 2006.
In coping with the Light Rail service improvement, KCRC will offer the following supplementary transport arrangements for Tin Shui Wai passengers on 9 October:
Special bus trips for the Route K73P running from Tin Heng to Yuen Long East will be arranged at a frequency of 10 minutes during the morning peak hours between 7am and 9 am from Mondays to Fridays.
The service of the Circular Route K74 (Tin Shui and Yuen Long West, Circular) will be strengthened and extended to Yuen Long East.
KCRC will offer free interchange to passengers who use Octopus to interchange between K73 and K74 for easy access to/from Yuen Long East.
Service of K76 which runs between Tin Heng and West Rail Tin Shui Wai Station will be strengthened. The frequency will be enhanced from 5 to 4 minutes during peak hours.
Service of K51 (Fu Tai and Tai Lam) will be strengthened. The frequency will be enhanced from 7.5 to 6 minutes during peak hours.
To effectively allocate resources and benefit more residents in northwest New Territories, from 9 Oct onwards, KCRC will cease the operation of K2P (between Tin Shui Wai Town Centre and Tuen Mun Town Centre), which has an extremely low patronage.
